HD DVD stands for High Definition Digital Video Disc wow that’s a mouth full, and what is HD DVD?
You see the HD era is coming to us thick and fast we are constantly told to upgrade our televisions to HD ready, why? Well HD offers an all new experience everything is better! Your picture quality is unmatched on a HD TV, the sound is better it’s just like what DVD claimed to be when first released. I kind of lost topic there, you see HD DVD is just the same it’s a new format of DVD that will give us even better sound and images.
Why upgrade? Well the simple fact is you don’t have to if you don’t want to stick to what you have, I to be honest wouldn’t even bother with HD DVD and would go straight for blu-ray (another topic I have mentioned) I don’t see HD DVD lasting with blu-ray on the market.
Some facts now you see HD DVD can store 15 GB of data, a dual layer one will store 30GB and there is even talk of a three layer disc that will hold 45GB though I doubt that for some reason.
This will allow companies to burn both the standard DVD format and the HD DVD format to one HD DVD disc, clever huh. This will allow a HD DVD disc to run in a normal DVD player, although you won’t be able to access the HD DVD format, so basically you’ll be able to watch the standard version.
So if you really want to watch a HD DVD what must you do? The simple fact is go buy a brand new HD DVD player they can range from £250 to £500 depending on company and specs, or if you own an xbox 360 wait for the separate HD DVD drive to be released for £99.
I cant see the point of all of this as clearly the blu-ray format will take over even the HD DVD format, to me it’s a gimmick a simple way to squeeze a few more £ out of the everyday shopper, but if you want the new gizmos then go buy one.
