How to Check Your Hard Drive for Errors

Check your hard rive for errors. You will need to have a Windows disc for the operating system you have.

  1. Turn on your computer and put the Windows disc in.
  2. When it says press any key to boot from CD, press any key.
  3. Wait for everything to load. It should then give you a few choices. Select the one that says repair Windows or something similar.
  4. Proceed through the steps until you come to a black screen. It should ask you for an option to choose which drive you want, so you select one.
  5. Enter the administrator password. (It will prompt you for this.)
  6. After you have entered the password, type in "chkdsk /r" without the quotes.
  7. Wait for the process to complete. This may take 30min-2hrs depending on your processor.
  8. When it has completed, it should say if there were any errors and if they were fixed or not. Then type "restart" without the quotes.
