Voice Control

Did you know that you can control your computer by talking? It is very easy and fun! You should try it.

Computer has ears. Maybe not ears, but he can hear us. All we have to do is connect a microphone and install a special program. Then we will be able to control our computer with voice. It is more interesting to do something with your mouth that with your hands. I will show you how to do that with a free program “KM Remote”. You will also find out how to write documents with your voice.

What we need

First of all we need a sound card. Sound card lets computer to get sound and record it. We won't be able to record sound without a microphone. You should have a good microphone, because cheap ones won't record sound correctly. If you don't have headphones, you should have speakers, because you need to hear what you have recorded.

Configuring microphone

  1. Press START and RUN. Enter sndvol32. Press ENTER.
  2. Find Microphone and make volume to max then go to step 4. If you don't see microphone do next step.
  3. Press OPTIONS, after that PROPERTIES. In new window select PLAYBACK and then MICROPHONE. Press OK.
  4. Press OPTIONS and select ADVANCED CONTROLS. Now press ADVANCED. Select 1 MICROPHONE +20dB BOOST (some computers have 1 MICROPHONE BOOST or 1 MIC BOOST). Press close.
  5. Press OPTIONS and PROPERTIES again and after that select RECORDING and MICROPHONE. Press OK.
  6. Make sure microphone volume is set to max.

Controlling PC with voice

“KM Remote” works only with “Windows 2000/XP” OS. First download “KM Remote” from internet.

  • In your internet browser enter kmtools and press ENTER.
  • In this webpage find DOWNLOAD. Press it. After that press PRIMARY DOWNLOAD ENGLISH.

Installing program

  1. Open downloaded file.
  2. Press OK. Then OK again.
  3. Then press NEXT and INSTALL.
  4. Press YES.

Configuring “KM Remote”

  1. Press OK.
  2. Press OPTIONS and SETTINGS.
  3. Press VOICE COMMANDS. Press AUTO. Then say few words to microphone. Press OK. Program automatically configures microphones sensitivity.
  4. In Similarity enter 130. That way program will recognize you perfectly. Press OK.

Controlling with voice

With program “KM Remote” we can control many programs. For example I will show you how to open “Winamp” with “KM Remote”.

  1. Press ADD BUTTON in “KM Remote” and double-click DEFAULT BUTTON.
  2. In name enter Winamp - start. Select VOICE and press ADD BUTTON.
  3. In new window press record and say your command. We will be able to, listen our command by pressing LISTEN. If we like it press REMEMBER. Program will remember this command. We will have to record four times like this so program will recognize them correctly.
  4. Now you have to show which program will open when you'll say that command. Press DEFAULT ACTION and in name enter programs name. Select STARTING.
  5. Now press FIND. After that a new window should appear. Find your program and press OPEN.
  6. Now press ACTIVATES and now you can see if your command works. Say your command into microphone. If you will say it correctly, winamp should open.

Program writes text

Free program “KM Remote” doesn't have any abilities to let you write documents. Most popular programs are “Dragon Naturally Speaking” and “IBM ViaVoice”. These programs can work with English, German, French, Italian and Spanish languages.
