10 Good Steps for Freeing and Speeding Up Your Computer

This is only for Windows XP users.

1. Anti Virus

   Please update your anti virus and scan your computer fully. This will help you remove viruses that have been using your free space and slowing your computer down. If you do not have an anti-virus. Download a free one called “AVG” from download.com

2. Remove Programs

   Removing useless and unused programs on your computer is one of the best ways to making your computer much faster. To remove programs easily, go to Start  Control Panel  Add Or Remove Programs. From here you can remove programs without having to search your computer for an uninstall application.

3. Disabling Startup Applications

   When you start your computer, how long does it take your computer to finish loading items. 5 minutes? 10 minutes? Well disable the ones that you usually don't use for a fast start up. Go to Start  Run  type in “msconfig” without quotes and hit enter. Then go to start up tab and disable the items that you do not wish to show at start up.

4. Disk Clean Up

   Temporary Internet files usually take up a lot of space on your computer. Removing them once and awhile will free up space on your computer.
   
   Go to Start  My Computer  Right click on your local disk and click on Properties. Now click on the button disk clean up. Once loading is complete. Select the stuff you want to clean. I recommend temporary files to be checked.

5. CCleaner

   Download a program from download.com called “CCleaner”. This will clean your registry from errors and unnecessary items.

6. RamBooster 2

   Download a program from download.com called “RamBooster 2”. This will make your computer faster by adjusting your ram.

   Disk Defragmenter

   Use a system tool called “Disk Defragmenter” which will speed up your computer and free up some space. Go to Start  All Programs  Accessories  System Tools  Disk Defragmenter.

7. Popup Blocker

   Download a popup blocker to stop unwanted popups while you are doing your work on the Internet. Some popups are known to be harmful and download unwanted programs on your computer.

8. Windows Updates

   Make sure that you download and install any updates from “Windows Update” system tool on your computer for your Windows XP. Some updates will make your computer faster.

9. Downloading Safe Files

   When you download a file make sure you scan it with your anti virus or use this site to scan the file to make sure that you are not opening something harmful.
