10 Freewares to Keep Your PC Efficient

After the increase in the number of free wares available, it is often confusing to know what to download and what not to download. Here are ten free wares that can increase the efficiency of your computer. Try them out and see the difference for yourself.

  1. Omziff

Omziff is a free encryption program that splits files and does secure file deletion. It also generates random passwords for files to keep them more secure. Moreover, it doesn't need to be installed. Unzip it and it is ready to serve.
  2. Comodo Firewall Pro

Comodo Firewall Pro is an excellent PC firewall. It gives complete protection from hackers, Trojans, spyware and identity theft. It stops malware from being installed and allows only applications that you approve to be installed on your computer.
  3. RoboForm2Go

RoboForm2Go is the most recommended free password management software. It generates random passwords that hackers cannot guess and encrypts the information (given by you) with AES. It helps you log in automatically by memorizing your passwords and fight against Phishing.
  4. Belarc Advisor

Belarc Advisor builds a detailed profile of your installed software and hardware, missing Microsoft hotfixes, anti-virus status, CIS (Center for Internet Security) benchmarks, and displays the results in your Web browser. With Belarc Advisor, you will instantly know if your PC is missing some critical, Windows security patches.
  5. CurrPorts

CurrPorts is a port scanner. It is very beneficial in tracing system and network slowdowns and finding the root cause of it. It scans local windows open ports and the processes using them. You can save the findings by exporting it into a HTML report. You can terminate any malicious processes you find.
  6. Magic Transfer

Magic transfer is a free PC backup program that helps you transfer windows settings to another PC. This freeware backs up your windows settings including Windows system settings, Internet Explorer settings, Mozilla Firefox settings and Microsoft Outlook settings and restore them each time virus or spyware messes up your system.
  7. FreeMeter

FreeMeter is a powerful system monitor for windows without slowing down the system itself. This freeware monitors disk space, CPU usage, physical memory usage, page file usage and alert you when your system is low on disk space.
  8. LanSpy

LanSpy is a PC auditing software as well as a network security scanner. It is an effective port scanner too. It helps you learn more on the networked computers around you, not your PC alone.
  9. Unlocker

Unlocker, as the name suggests, unlocks any locked files and folders to ease deletion. It deletes stubborn, annoying file and folders.
  10. Eraser

Eraser is a free secure deletion tool. It helps you completely remove sensitive data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times with carefully selected patterns.

Nice article, I hadn't heard of half of these before! Thanks!

I think you should have put Revo Uninstaller on this list, it is a useful program used to remove any traces of a program on your system, and control system tasks such as what programs start up with windows.

Sincerely

- eimaj

If you want to keep your pc efficient, the best thing that you can do is forget Windooze O.S's and switch to linux. Its also free =)

buenos programas grax!!!
#13 by tim, May 3, 2008
What's to say you're not being paid to recommend these? I haven't heard of any of these programs. Might be because they're not that good. Or not.

Just be aware that just because this site isn't selling you anything, it's not necessarily legitimate. Do your own research.

Tim,
There is nothing to say that you don't work for a company that is trying to sell commercial alternatives to any to these free programs.

I've worked in the computer industry for almost 15 years now as a security specialist, and 8 or 9 out of 10 times, I have much more success with free programs then any service my company has ever payed for. Comodo is one of the best programs period that you can put on you machine for security, both versions of it are excellent.

For those who've expressed skepticism about these programs because they've never heard of them, but as a freeware hobbiest I know most of them and plan to try the 1 or 2 I haven't heard of because of the 8 others on the list that I've found to be excelllent.
#24 by Neo, May 10, 2008
Revo Uninstaller is a great free uninstaller, which could be added to the list!

I appreciate this article. My boyfriend has been using various programs to beter his computer\'s performance, however these have been paid for and can become quite expensive and are not necessarily all they are made out to be. I will be sharing this article and hopefully will help pass the word!!

I've had excellent results with Comodo Firewall. This list is great to know. :) Thanks for compiling it.
#33 by Dangerous News, May 23, 2008
Thanks, i've already started using these items and am seeing results
#34 by theangusburger, May 27, 2008
Looks good but I just wanted to ask (i'm not that good with computers) , do any of these actually increase computer speed?
#35 by Lex, May 28, 2008
TheAngusBurger, NO. I can't see any of these bringing a significant boost to your PC's performance. If you are looking for a performance boost, try CCleaner and run both the sweep and registry repair tools.

I'm having a hard time understanding what is so useful about this list.
Omziff - why? I don't use floppy disks anymore.
Comodo - I use a Linksys router. Just use the Windoze firewall; anyother firewall program will just piss off Windoze and cause problems
RoboForm2Go - Doesn't your browser keep track of these now?
Belarc - My goodness! Learn to turn on AutoUpdates on these programs.
CurrPort, LanSpy, - Yeah, I have them and used, um...once, twice?
FreeMeter - trinket. Doesn't help you unless you know the problem.
Magic Transfer - You'll need this, once, twice?
Eraser - Just defrag your drive.

Sorry, this list surprised me for its uselessness.

"Freeware" is not a countable noun.
