How to Make a Funny Picture

Here is a step by step guide to help you to turn an ordinary photograph into an interesting funny picture.

  1. Start with a clever photo.

Either take a new photo or find one you have already taken that is not a typical shot. These different photos lend themselves more to creativity. Use your own photographs. This is because there are so many problems with copyright laws. Yes, even photographs can be protected by copyright laws and could be in a lot of trouble for using somebody's work without their written permission. Plus it is far more professional to use your own photos. I am going to start with this photo of a bunny, in this case my daughters pet Marissa. She is in an unusual pose, actually grooming herself, but it looks like she could be doing one of many things, looking in her purse, covering her mouth as she sneezes, drinking, or even holding a gun, lining up for a shot. Come up with several ideas and pick the best.
  2. Add you own art.

I do not have Photoshop, but use a similar program called Corel Photo Paint. It was a painstaking process for me with out all the fancy tools, I relied only on my mouse to add my ideas artistically. I decided she looked like she was holding a gun. So I looked for photos of guns, At first I was thinking of a handgun, or rifle, but then settled on an AK-47. I drew the outline of the gun first, and added the detail inside. Detail is very important, especially be sure to add shadow when you are drawing objects on top of a photograph. Save your work often. Not everyone is good at drawing, this is okay, it is easier to draw on paper first, what you want on your computer, so you know what you are doing. Now the bunny looks like she is holding a gun. Terrific, save your final work.
  3. Add a caption.

All the hard work is done, now you just need to think of a funny caption if you did not already have one in mind. Place the caption on your photo so it does not cover up your work, make sure the colors and font lend themselves to the overall picture. The caption should be short, simple, and make the picture complete. This is my finished work.
  4. More ideas

Sometimes a picture lends itself to more than one possibility, as such I did another work with the original photo. I thought Marissa would look cute holding a cup of tea.

I feel this picture is fine without a caption, but if I come up with something clever I have the original saved so can add it at any time.

As an added note, Marissa was a wonderful pet, a bunny my daughter had purchased at an unusual livestock auction, she was a registered fuzzy lop. Sadly she passed away this summer, due to a horrid problem called "Fly Strike". If you have pet bunnies who live outdoors at all, please read up about this problem. Yes, flies can kill bunnies.

sorry you didnt like it john, as you will have noted, I dont have the "tools" most people have, I only have a mouse, it is pretty hard work to draw anything with a mouse. Also you will note its about how to change an awkward pose into a fun picture, it is not about "Corel" or "Photoshop" skills.
The whole idea is that anyone can do it, skills, or no skills.

My dearest John,

Just because a person isn\'t Da Vinci doesn\'t mean they shouldn\'t be allowed to express themselves through art, nor share their creativity with others. Such claims are an insult to the ideals of democracy and freedom of speech.

Everyone told Picasso that he sucked. Einstein failed maths. Jackson Pollock was laughed out of his own exhibition. Lance Armstrong had the balls to win, even though they\'d been removed.

Great adversity makes a great man. B Nelson isn\'t about to win a prize for his work, but compared to most hobbyists, his composition is neat and he has an eye for detail. I enjoyed both the article and the images. B Nelson does not claim to be an professional CG artist, he is simply sharing his findings with others.

John; If you are a whizz at photo manipulation, tsk! Once upon a time, you were also experimenting and figuring out the software.
If you are not a professional graphic designer then you are a hypocrite. I challenge you to do better.

Photo editing requires skill that can be gained only through practice. Are you the kind of person who trips up small children when they are learning to walk, John?

I challenge you to take the bait. I\'ll whip your ass at Photoshop. Play fair and pick on someone your own size.

Best regards,

Catherine

Thanks Catherine!
This article was written to be make things fun and easy - not to show off Photoshop skills which would only frustrate (and insult) somebody who is trying to do something new.
