Seven Absolutely Essential Programs

A list of useful, and free, programs for windows.

  1. Mcafee AOL Special Edition

This program is totally free, and is the same mcafee youd buy in stores. The only difference is this Mcafee has been enhanced with a special behavior blocker, making sure you are protected even against the newest viruses.
  2. Avira Antivir

For those of you who have a laptop, an older computer or simply don't want to deal with Mcafee's CPU and RAM sucking behavior, try Avira. It is THE free antivirus to have, in fact it rates #1 freeware antivirus over all others, including Avast! and AVG.
  3. Zone Alarm

Zone alarm is my choice in firewall due to the fact that it doesn't have a BILLION popups like some of the “better” programs. If you truly need maximum strength protection, and can live with twenty or more popups confirming you wish to continue each installation of ANYTHING, get comodo firewall. Otherwise, stick with Zone Alarm. Easy, efficient, all around good.
  4. Ad-Aware

Ad-aware is one of the best spyware removal tool out there. While it doesn't contain advanced components such as real time protection, it can really help to remove spyware. This is my favorite spyware removal tool because its easy to use and update.
  5. Opera Web Browser

Opera is the best choice in web browser because it is extremely fast, light on resources and is customizable. It has a multitude of “widgets”, which resemble Firefox's add ons. It is also skin-able, with more skins than Firefox it self. It even has a version for your phone!
  6. Songbird

Although this program is made with mozilla, mozilla does NOT own or operate this. Is Itunes giving you trouble? Acting slow? Not working at all? Well now there's a solution! With songbird, you can download music strait to your library, FREE. It also has support for ipods and a built in web browser. Can your Itunes do that?
  7. Openoffice.org

Finally we come to the end of the list. Last, but certainly not least is openoffice. Openoffice contains programs much like microsoft word, exel, and others. It contains a slideshow maker, a spreadsheet maker, word processor and more. Moreover, it is totally free!

All of the above programs are compatible with windows vista, and should be compatible with windows XP and below as well.
