Top Mac OSX Tips You Didn't Know About

Calculator in Spotlight

Spotlight is a great way to instantly find files and programs you are looking for based on their file name or context. But did you know that Spotlight can also function as a quick (and scientific) calculator?

Simply open Spotlight (keyboard shortcut command + space) and type an equation. It can be simple such as 2+2 or advanced such as (3.2-1.4)*1.99. It accounts for order of operations and supports most mathematical functions.

Silent Volume Change

Have you ever been in a place where you want to adjust your volume, but don't want to disrupt those around you in a meeting or in class with the “clicking” that is produced from your speakers?

Try holding down the shift key while pressing volume up or down. The volume is changed silently.

Unmount Multiple Volumes At Once

With the introduction of the Time Machine feature and Boot Camp, I have found that my external hard drive has three separate partitions. When unmounting, I found it annoying to drag each partition to the trash to eject them all.

Instead, try holding the alt/option key while dragging a single partition to the trash to eject it. All partitions on the same physical device will be ejected simultaneously.

The last two tips require that you install Onyx. Onyx allows you to modify features that are currently present on your computer, but normally hidden. It does not install anything that is not currently on your computer.

Slick Dock

I have found that the new reflective 3D dock format is sometimes hard to see when there are many applications open and with certain desktop images. It is also difficult to see which applications are “glowing” and open.

Open the Parameters window in Onyx and select the Dock tab. Under Appearance choose 2D With Transparency Effect. This will give your dock a new and clean look that you may not have ever seen.

Disable Processor

When in class with my MacBook I always try everything to conserve battery power. It used to frustrate me knowing that two processors were eating up my battery power when the only thing open was Word.

There is a Preference Pane that can be unlocked through Onyx called Processor Prefs. To access this open the Parameters window in Onyx and select the General tab. At the bottom of the screen click on Install Processor Preference Pane.

From there, you can see how hard your processors are working (on multi-core systems). You can then disable the processors that you choose to conserve battery power. A quick icon can also be added to the toolbar by the clock.

I have seen a 45 minute increase in battery life solely by disabling my second processor.

I hope you find these tips interesting and useful! I would appreciate any feedback you may have.

Open Office

When my computer crashed, I was spent a very long week scrambling together the means to continue my various sorts of work. Both my public jobs had microsoft office programs, but at home I was left with a linux box which had Open Office.

Open Office will recognize Microsoft documents and open them, but the reverse is not true. It is, in many ways, a fairly versatile suite of programs. Although OpenOffice.org requests donations of time or cash, the program can be downloaded for free. This is a definite advantage in a week when the world seems to be full of unexpected expenses!

While it is a little clunky when compared to Microsoft, the Open Office suite offers a viable alternative for the budgetarily challenged user. I found very little difference when using the text editor; the spreadsheet was quite reasonable-except for a couple of sort features. The database program seemed to me about as comprehensible as any database program. (Not my personal area of expertise-maybe someday...) The presentation software proved easy t o use, quite versatile. Open Office Math is completely beyond my personal comprehension. I squeaked through my college math classes, and breathed a sigh of relief when I put them behind me. It looks really interesting though-lots of equation-type stuff. Very nice.

I was delighted with the drawing tool. For years, I have put up with Paint (better than nothing), and various budget photo editors. Of those, JASC was probably the best; but when my trial down-load (and the class I was taking) ended, the funds weren't available for the full edition.
Open Office also offers the ability to export files as pdf.

In short, Open Office is a fairly versatile suite of editing and presentation tools. It is a viable alternative to more expensive programs suitable for keeping home office records, writing essays and a variety of other tasks.

Automated Ot, Leave and Change Shift Monitoring

In global perspective, monitoring overtime, leave and change shift has been a central discussion in business world. There were series of article written in which employee pleads for appreciation and they feel valued whenever an effort has been commended.

Locally, Human Resource Management alone does the job of monitoring overtime, leave and change shift. This setting is indeed a false one. Most of the companies in the Philippines are owned by the Japanese and the American. Certainly, Filipinos encompass ¾'s of the population. Unfortunately, it is proven that most of the Filipinos relate themselves to common local connotation that is “Mamaya Na!”

Likewise, Ibiden Philippines, Inc. monitors overtime, leave and change shift through HR Department. Other departments just like QA monitors overtime, leave and change shift but not as serious as HR's monitoring. Some departments even rely with HR's update by the end of the month. Sadly, there was a delay in HR updates.

Hence, Automated OT, Leave & Change Shift Monitoring® was developed to alleviate the scenario.

Productivity

In the first place, IPI employees are unconscious of their productivity since there was no monitoring at all. This allows them to work without direction in the sense that they will just work in manner of just working.

Quality

Some departments have monitoring of overtime, leave and change shift. However, their monitoring is manual. Manual monitoring is susceptible to human errors. Thus, the quality and accuracy of computation is being sacrificed.

Cost

Since there was no monitoring of overtime, employees can render overtime on the basis of their “wants” not on the “needs of the company” for their service. This fact incurs cost.

Morale

No recognition is given to employees who were not able to file leave and change shifts per month. This hampers appreciation and employee satisfaction.

How to Display the Lyrics as the Songs Play in Windows Media Player

One of the least utilized (yet most simple) things you can do to increase enjoyment of your Windows Media Player (WMP) is to enable it to display the lyrics of the song being played in addition of the visualizations or video. And you have the option of displaying them either scrolling along with the song, or as static lyrics which show several lines at once that you manually advance. Either way, you can do it in about a minute.

First Things First

The first step is to pledge allegiance to the Republican Party. This type of technology in the hands of a Democrat could significantly alter mankind as we now know it. You must also acknowledge that if your relationships suffer due to continued use of this program as karaoke - defined as uttering sounds that may or may not sound like the words of the songs - I am not liable. And last, but not least, you must promise that occasionally you will leave a nickel or a dime in the coin return chute of any vending machine so that it will create a small sense of joy to some random person who will find it at some point in the future! Who doesn't smile when they find extra change in the return? And the world could use more smiles.

Let's Get To Work

The following steps will show you how to manually add lyrics to your songs. Before we head off to the internet, open your Windows Media Player (WMP). Right click next to the "Now Playing" tab at the top of the player and enable the "show classic menu" option. You can uncheck it later if you prefer not seeing it but we are going to use the menus often enough to keep it visible for now. These instructions I am giving you assumes that you have the latest version of WMP installed. (Version 11) If you are not sure, click the help button and click on "About Windows Media Player". This will tell you what version you have installed. If it is an earlier version, I suggest that you upgrade to WMP 11. It is so much better than the earlier versions.
Now click the "Play" option at the top and go down to the "Lyrics, Captions, and Subtitles" option and click "On if Available".

Find a Web site that catalogues song lyrics. Most will let you copy their lyrics without jumping through any hoops. Highlight the text of the lyrics and then either right click and select "copy", or use Control+C. Make sure that no other parts of the page get highlighted accidentally. You only want the text. Here are four Web sites where you should be able to find your songs and they are user friendly.

http://www.elyrics.net/

http://www.lyricsmode.com/

http://www.musicsonglyrics.com/

http://www.oldielyrics.com/

Here is a cool little known secret: If you take the main word of a ".com" website such as "oldielyrics" in the fourth website I listed above, and type it into your address search bar and then hit Cntrl+Enter, your computer will add the http://www. before your word and .com after your word.}

Open your WMP and click on the Library tab. Find the song you just copied the lyrics for and right click on it. (Fig. 1) Highlight the "Advanced Tag Editor" and hit enter. This will open the "Advanced Tag Editor". (Fig. 2)

Select the "lyrics" tab, choose a language, select the "add" tab, click in the blank text box and paste your lyrics by either right click and select "paste" or Control+V. (Fig. 3) If you stop at this point, you will have "static" text that does not scroll as the song plays. If you want the scrolling text, click on the "Synchronized Lyrics" button just below the text box. You will see that the lyrics are now loaded with each line having a time value next to it. This value represents exactly when each line of lyrics will be visible on the WMP.

Below this, you will see the same information graphically. Sometimes the WMP errs on the exact time to display each line. If this is the case click the value in the time column, select "edit" and then type the new time value. (Fig. 4) You can check how accurate it is by hitting play and watching when the red lyric bar crosses over the time bar. You can also edit the lyrics to add or change words in each line. If you need to add a whole line, hit add, type in the new line of lyrics and then assign it a time value. When you hit enter, it will insert itself in the correct place.

Life Threatening Toxins From a Dead Computer

A dead PC is a box of deadly chemicals just waiting to break out. Extinct PC's should be labelled as 'toxic' waste and here's the reason why.

A computer contains not one, but eight toxic chemicals, all of which can do serious harm to the environment and to human beings.

Photo: Wikipedia

Arsenic

This is often used to make printed circuit boards because it is a very good conductor. Levels are very low but in a recycling centre, or a dump they may accumulate and become a very serious health hazard.

Mercury

This element is used in flat screen displays and can escape when a monitor is dismantled. It can easily get into water supplies where it transforms into methyl mercury which builds up in the body of fish and enters the food chain.

Beryllium

This is a very lightweight metal which is used in computer motherboards. Beryllium dust is toxic to humans and can cause lung problems. This metal and its compounds have been classed as carcinogens by the International Agency for Research on Cancer.

Cadmium

This is used inside your computer to make contacts and switches and rechargeable batteries. It has been banned in the European Union since 2006 but there are many computers around that are much older than that. Cadmium oxides are toxic to plants, fish, humans and animals and inhaling them can cause cancer.

Lead

Photo: Wikipedia

Lead was originally used to solder on printed circuit boards and that too was banned in EU in July 2006. It is toxic to humans and it is thought that low level exposure to this chemical may impact on the development of the brain in children.

Flame Retardants

Some of the materials used as flame retardants inside computers are toxic if released into the atmosphere. If cases are crushed or broken these materials get into the air and can hamper brain and skeletal development in animals (including humans.)

Phthalates

These are used in the making of plastics and the most widely used one is DEHP which is classified in EU as toxic to reproductive health. There are no controls on the use of these chemicals in plastic production, although regulations do exist to limit their use in the production of children's chewable toys.

Selenium

Selenium is often used in printed circuit boards and prolonged, high level exposure to this chemical is know to cause neurological problems in humans.

So, when your PC dies don't dismantle it yourself for your own safety and think carefully before you dump it. You may be leaving a box of lethal chemicals out there somewhere for some unsuspecting person to release.

10 Super Cool Mouse Pads That You Probably Didn’t Know About

Mouse pads reflect the user's personality or sense of style and sophistication. Not all mouse pads are created equally and really for all practical purposes, the “10 Super Cool Mouse Pads” featured in this article is a reflection of the modern-day computer nerd and gadget geek combined.

Mouse pads have come a long ways in the last several years and a long ways from the plain old foam, plain Jane jobs that we see sitting on top the majority of desks in stuffy offices everywhere. Our mouse pads started out to solve a problem that helped our computer mouse to more easily glide, which gave us more error-free control over our cursor on our computer desktop. The smooth, flat surface of the mouse pad made a perfect location to silkscreen company logos, trademarks and photography that would create another cottage industry of collectible mouse pads.

Today, there are thousands and maybe even millions of different mouse pad designs both high-tech and low-tech, colorful and bland, expensive and cheap that would overwhelm the average person. There is absolutely no way in the world that this article can even to begin scratch the surface of all of the awesome and cool mouse pad designs, so stay tuned for other cool mouse pad articles that I will be writing in the weeks ahead. So, please enjoy and thank you for your support.

Computer mouse designs have come along way since they were first commercially mass-produced for the retail market. The computer mouse went from being leashed on a cord to winning its freedom and becoming cordless. The technological and cosmetic advances didn't stop after the cord came off either.

The removal of the cord was the first hurdle to overcome, and next the focus seemed to shift to packing more functionally into a smaller streamline version of the computer device. After mouse functionally was improved upon, the designers and manufacturers began to focus on making the mouse trendy cool for youthful user.

This article only introduces you to a small fraction of a very large product line of computer mouse or mouse-related products currently available for sale on the market today. This is the first article in a mini-series of articles that will present new mouse and mouse-related products to you.

Please, be sure to leave any comments in the comment section provided at the bottom of this article. If you want me to investigate an unique mouse or mouse related product to consider for inclusion in the next article of this series, then please leave a complete website address where the mouse or mouse related product can be found and I will check it out.
