Learn HTML Quickly

Hello my name is Kevin Hopcraft and I am going to teach you how to make web pages with HTML code. HTML code is really simple and is nothing like programming at all; actually it is the easiest type of code out there. So if you are trying to learn HTML because you would like to be a programmer, HTML is good to start but don't study it for hours, when you are done go to CSS. Anyway, continuing the tutorial for making web pages.

It is best to start HTML by understanding what it means. So I will explain in detail to you exactly what HTML stands for: Hyper Text Markup Language. Why would it stand for this? I have no idea; I am not her to explain that(just to explain it's meaning;D). The code you use for a web page is never in capitals. A simple webpage looks like this:

This is the text that appears on any tabs you create in Firefox or Internet explorer. Also in a search engine this is what appears as the name of you're website.

Under body is where you type all you're code that you want to do things and all you're text that you want displayed.

If you save this as an HTML file with notepad (for windows) or text edit (with Mac)
With the extension of html, you will get something like this:

Notice that the text typed in between the tags show up on the screen yet the title doesn't. This is because the text in the body tags always shows up here. By the way a tag is just a command used in HTML.

Now I'll explain all of the other commands shown. Always when you make an html document you must start it with otherwise it will not work with all browsers. After the tag you will have to make a tag which holds all the ‘invisible' information needed, then there is a tag which is the title of the page as I have said previously.

Now then you notice a tag, whenever you make a tag there has to be an end and when you put a / in front of your tag it means that you have ended the code before it.

Make sure you have an end tag for every tag you make. Onward we march, after the tag you will have a tag which ends the tag. There is then a tag which has under it, all the info you write to make what you want and all the small tags to make images appear and text to grow bigger or make it different colors and a lot more which I will explain in detail.

You guessed it the next tag is which ends the tag. Now you make an tag which ends the tag and you have made a web page. Go down and I'll show you some code to make images appear and align text. First a little review:

Basic Commands Needed

This is where you name your page. It will show in a new tab. Under body is where you type all the code and text you want to use for your page and stuff.

All right now then;

Web page with image and links:

Title

http://www.google.ca/">Google

This is the image tag, you always need to have the img and the src part. Src is basically what you put the image in. Img is just there to tell the browser it's an image tag but it's still required. Notice that there is no tag, that is because this is one of a dozen or so tags that does not require the end tag.

Google

This is the link tag a means ‘anchor' href is what you always use for the link to the website, in between the "" you will see http://www.google.ca/ well if you wanted to link to a page you made you would have to just put the filename, for example: ‘thing.html'. Once the tag is ended you see Google, well this is where you name the link and it's what the user will see when they open the page. Then you close the tag with a tag.

Now I am going to show you a few basic commands to layout the page and

make a table. Any other tags you want to learn (and there are lots!!!) you can

search Google for a lot . But I do recommend this website:

http://www.w3schools.com

This website is a very good website for learning more html and stuff like that. Continuing: A table command.

makes a table with a border of 1 px. If you don't want a border

just take that part away.

This starts a new table row

This starts a new table cell

Anything in between these shows up in a table cell!

This ends the previous cell

This ends the previous row

This starts another table row

This starts another table cell

Anything in between these shows up in a table cell!

This ends that table cell

This ends that table row

This ends the table

What this would end up with is something like this:

How to make your page aligned nice and neat:

Makes everything in between these two tags align left.

Makes everything in between these two tags align right.

To make things go in the center you use Alright that's the end of this tutorial. Hope you learned how to make a web page. Remember go to www.w3schools.com for more info.

Keeping Your PC Fast: Four Great Tools

Advanced Windows Care Personal

Advanced Windows Care is an excellent software and free for personal use. It can Scan and Remove Spywares, Prevent Spyware from installing on your PC, Search and Fix Registry entries and values, Optimize your system, Control and Optimize Startup items, Erase your Surfing traces and Clean up Junk files from hard disk. Additional Tools like memory optimizer, startup manager and disk manager are also provided.

Avast Antivirus

Antivirus = Bloatware. This is the equation which most of us have in mind. After all, these softwares are biggest memory consumers. But have you ever heared of light antivirus. If not, this is the one and that too free. It is pretty fast and consumes very less memory. It provides all round protection from viruses. It is perhaps the only antivirus with support for skins. Yes, you read it right, you can easily skin it. And by skins, I do not mean the just changing colors like some other softwares, the skins change whole the interface. Just see the screenshots above, they show the skinability of Avast! First one is Avast's Default interface and second is a Skin Downloaded from avast.com.

CCleaner

Advanced Windows Care will automatically fix registry issues for you but what if you are left with a nasty installer? Many times, uninstalling a program does not remove all the data from registry and you are left with the program still showing up in the Add/Remove Programs. CCleaner can help you at such times. It can Run Uninstallers, Rename Entry and Remove junk Entries. Additionally, it can clear you history, optimize registry and manage Startup Items.

IOBit Smart Defrag

PC slowness is mostly caused due to fragmentation. You have to manually defrag the drives using Windows Defrag and this takes too much time. It would be nice if you had a software that could automatically defrag your hard disk! So, here is IOBit Smart Defrag. It is free or personal use and automatically defrags your hard disk when the computer is idle. Manual defrag is also available and you can schedule a defrag. It is an install and forget solution to end your problems.

Super Talent Pico 8gb Gold Flash Drive Review

Remember the days of the old floppies? *Sigh * - 1.44 MB on a 5.25" square disc. Now we have ultra-fast and cheap memory - especially in the past year where memory prices have gone down so much, now you can practically.

Here we're reviewing the new 8 gigabyte super talent pico - also available in 2gb and 4gb sizes. It is a very small flash drive and it is rated at 200X. On Newegg this flash drive costs just $30 shipped! But how well does it perform? Let's find out!
All benchmarks were done with Windows Vista Home Premium with Service Pack 1 on a Core 2 Duo e4300 @ 2.43GHz and 2gb of ddr2 750 .

HD Tach

We used the HD Tach program to measure flash drive speeds.

The Super Talent Pico got an average burst speed of about 35.2 mb/s - which isn't bad for a flash drive! Here are the full results -

Write Tests

We measure how long it takes to transfer a gOS 3 Beta ISO to the flash drive.
Time: It took 1:05 to do, which is about 10.76 MB/sec - not bad, but a bit slower than I expected,

So the final verdict awaits us!

Pros:
Very Small - Could Almost be mistaken for a piece of jewelry (the gold-plated edition).
Read Speeds are Very Fast
8 Gigabyte Storage Space
Same price as "normal sized" flash drives

Cons:

Write Speeds are a tad slow.

Easy to lose

Overall – 9/10

Speed Up Your Computer

Is your computer as fast as you want it to be? Was it faster when you bought it then it is now? If you answered "yes", then you will want to read this guide. It will show you how to get your computer back to its original speed and who doesn't want a fast computer?

So what are we actually going to be doing you may ask? I will be showing you how to turn off some of the unwanted and useless programs that are running on your computer so you will be able to do many more things with your computer.

First, we'll check all of the things that are running on your computer. I bet you don't even know what half of these processes are. Simply hit Ctrl + Alt + Del. Then click on the processes tab. Look at all that junk! You don't even need a quarter of that stuff running on your computer.

Next, i will show you how to shut them down. Click on the "Start" menu and click on "run" or hold the "windows key" and press "R". When the run box appears type in "MSCONFIG" (without the "'s of course). Wait for the window to fully load. Now, go over to the services tab. On the bottom check the check box the "Hide all Microsoft Services". This is because most, if not all, of the Microsoft Services you need to run your computer.

Now you can start un-checking boxes that are not important. Say you have "iPod Service" running and you dont have an iPod anymore, you would uncheck that box. Another example is "PnkBsterA". It is for a game i dont play anymore. Only try to uncheck boxes that have an Unknown Manufacturer. Go thorugh the whole list, using your own judgement, to shut down programs.

After you have completed the "Services" tab, do the same thing with the "StartUp" tab. I would leave a majorty of these programs running but you can shut down a few if you wish. Look for the ones that don't have the "HKLM/Software/Windowns" or "HKCU/Software/Windows" location becuase these are required when to run your operating system.

Finnally, click the "OK" button. The MSCONFIG window will close and another pop-up box will come up. It will ask you to restsart your computer. I recomend doing it imediatly but if you choose to, you can do it later. Now when your computer restarts, look how much faster it is and how little time it takes to boot up. One more thing, follow this guide often because you are always installing new things on your computer. Thanks for reading and Good Luck!

The Sleek and Powerful 4th Gen Macbook Pro: A Story of How We Met

A couple of weeks ago, I stumbled across Apple's new product, the Macbook Pro. Yes, It's been around for forever, and I've heard about it, but I've never really, actually seen it. And what I saw was gorgeous. Basically, it's a powerful notebook with a pretty decent battery life. I had just gotten rid of my old laptop, a Pentium 4, 2.4 Ghz, 512 MB Ram, PCG-GRV 550 for its notorius fifteen minute battery life. Apparently, the designers decided to shove an inefficient desktop cpu into it! Anyway, I decided to look around online, do a bit of research. After an hour or two of looking on google, newegg, and tigerdirect, I decide on two options; building a barebones laptop or buying the macbook pro. Well, considering I'm a student, the price immediateley dropped to around $2,200. Additionally, I could sell the free ipod touch that would come with it and the price would be around $2,000. A same spec'd barebone that I could easily build would cost me aroun $1,600. Then the other factors came into play. I would have to either lug around a laptop with a terrible battery life, or I would have a think and reliable laptop with a decent battery life. To make a long story short, I went with the design and got the macbook pro. After about a week and a half of waiting, I got it! Right out of the box, a gorgeous sight greeted me. Instantly, I plugged in the charger and turned it on... The greeting movie.... the registration...and the desktop. This is my first mac, and here is what I can say about all of the hype; Macs are configured to be a bit smoother, and Windows pc's are great too. I didn't notice a substantial difference on using a mac (yes, some of the programs are cool) but overall, they are both computers. Although, I was a little dissapointed; I didn't acheive enlightment as soon as I bought it as Apple commercials tend to say. Oh Well :)

After using it for a couple of weeks:

Pros

Sleek Design

Battery Life around three hours

Fast!

Plenty of storage

Cons

Left corner of display is bent up, complained about it at Apple store, they refused to do anything about it

Battery life advertised to be 5 hours, instead 3

GETS HOT!

overall: I love it, just those cons

How to Improve the Performance of Your Computer

You can defragment your computer using an absolutely free program JkDefrag. You can download the following program here. Make sure you read some crucial information on that page. A defragmentation improves the speed of your computer by freeing space on your Hard Drive so it will take less memory… I recommend using JkDefrag because it has a feature, the screensaver feature, this feature automatically starts defragmenting when you make JkDefrag as your screensaver. To know how to install it as a screensaver, go on the website, and it will teach you how to do so.

Notes on JkDefrag:

You can close the defragmentation safely at anytime.
If you see giant lines,

don't worry its normal.

Get an easy to use Anti-Virus. I recommend everyone to use AVG, You can download it here. It's completely free but if you want more features to be added you can buy a fully licensed version of AVG. This is the best Anti-Virus I know because it reacts when you open an infected file. And Make sure to update the virus definitions at least once a week if you want a good protection on your computer and if you want it to run faster than usual.

Often empty the Recycle Bin because “deleting” something makes it go to the Recycle Bin and it does not delete it from the Hard Drive.

Don't download stupid unnecessary programs, for example: the Smiley Central ads you see almost everyday while surfing on the net. Those programs are unnecessary and slows your computer down. It says adware free on their download site, but do you really trust them? Well you shouldn't because those programs are filled with adwares and It won't be good for the performance and speed of your computer.

Ad/Popup Blockers. By having an Ad/Popup Blocker will really help the performance and speed of your computer. You can download an add-on for FireFox called AdBlocker Plus it literally blocks every single ad you can imagine just right click the add and choose Block Frame or Image You can download it here. You need to have FireFox to use this program. If you still use Internet Explorer, It's time to change. FireFox has less bugs and has a lot of more features than Internet Explorer. I just made a test, I opened Internet Explorer and FireFox with the same homepage,
Google
, and it showed 34.080K on memory usage for Internet Explorer and 30.612K memory usage for FireFox There is a big difference of it and it can improve your PC's speed.

Thanks for reading this and I hope you liked this tutorial.

Tips to Make Your Computer Faster

Uninstalling programs

You can uninstall programs to make your computer have more space and virtual memory. Go to control panel, add or remove programs then remove the programs you don't want.

Cleaning your temporary files

You can get rid of your temporary files to make your computer A LOT faster. 30 minutes of regular internet is about 40 megabytes. Eventually, you can have up to 100 megabytes or even 430 megabytes like I did! To get rid of them, first go to your internet browser, go to options, then internet options, then look for CLEAN TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES. Click that and than wait for it to clean. Then, you can clean the cookies, but if you want to save passwords and usernames then don't clean it.

Cleaning your Registry

Cleaning your registry can have many effects such as getting a faster start up time, and more virtual memory. To do this, I suggest you get a program like Abexo Registry Cleaner to clean your registry. First make a backup with the program so that if something goes critically wrong then you can fix it. It wont take long to fix and wont take long to scan.

Download CCleaner (Crap Cleaner)

This program is very good at cleaning “Crap” and is also a good registry cleaner. Run it weekly and you should be clean of “Crap” and have a faster internet/computer. Get it at ccleaner.com

Buy a new computer

If your computer has less than windows 2000, has a graphics card made before 2004, has less than 550 RAM and has a processor less than 1.5 GHz then you need an upgrade. Yeah, you can check all your statuses if you go to control panel and click system. You can get upgrades at Best Buy or at Circuit City and you can also get it online. Upgrades usually cost from $1 - $200.

How Fast Is Your Computer?

An Updated Anti Virus Software

This is a rather obvious one when you think about it, not just for computer security but also for computer optimum! Some viruses are written specifically for the purpose of tying up your RAM (what keeps your computer running fast) so it is essential that you keep your computer updated.
Most people go for the subscription type such as Norton or McAfee, this is fine however there are two that are completely free without advertisement for home use! Avast and AVG.

Did you know? Some banks require that you have an updated anti-virus software if you are to be covered when using their online banking services!

Spyware Destroyer

Spyware is software that installs itself on your computer without your permission, often via third party software to which you have given consent. Spyware is getting increasingly intelligent and it has become to differentiate between spyware and viruses! Spyware often records browsing history, install additional software/toolbars, changes your computer settings and fill your computer with pop ups - all of this contributing to the slowing down your computer.

Spyware Search & Destroy beats them all here, even the paid services! This is a completely free program with many users reporting over 50 of these nasty spyware on their first scan! (Remember to keep it updated)

Adware Destroyer

Similar to spyware, but less serious is adware. These are software that has been installed via the same methods as spyware, but the purpose of which is to play, download or show advertising material on the particular computer. Apart from being blatantly annoying this also slows down your computer.

How do you solve this? Ad-Aware. When kept updated Ad-Aware will scan your computer for advertising programs and zap them out of this orbit!

Abexo Registry Cleaner

Again another brilliant free program! First click backup to backup your registry in case anything goes wrong at any time. After this click scan where it will scan your computers registry for broken, computer slowing registry entries. Once your scan has finished select the ones to delete and just click delete!

Windows Startup Programs

This is not so much a program but a useful feature on Windows Computer that controls what starts up when your computer does, thus running in the background so potentially slowing down your computer if not required.

Just go to Start>Run and type in ‘msconfig' (without the ‘'). Go to the tab on the right hand side called "Startup". Here you will see all the files that start up when your computer does, any files that you rarely use should be deselected (they can always be opened once your computer has started). I normally deselect most here, e.g. mobile phone software, iTunes, P2P software and any other software that I will probably not be using. Everything can be changed back should you need, so don't worry!

Disk Defragment

This is a useful tool that each of us have on a Windows PC. When memory gets saved to a hard drive, different parts of the file (particularly big ones) often get spread to different parts of the drive. This is because it cannot save it all as one file and so must do it in parts, between other files (often where other information existed before). Disk Defragmentation simply moves everything up and deletes this data that had once been "deleted" and allows for more files to be saved. Brilliant!

This can be had if you go to Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Defragmenter. Once here choose your hard drive, click analyze and it will tell you whether you need to defragment!

PHP: Learn by Doing, Learn Faster by Breaking

PHP is a vast language. There are about 10-20 different ways of

accomplishing the same exact thing. A great programmer knows all of

these methods, but a great programmer I am not. But my experience has

done me well, and I will pass on my thoughts to you.

For the most part, I am self taught when it comes to PHP.

My roots

start with Perl, a language that was taught to me by my friend Ben. I learned a lot from him, and

I developed a strong base for when I dove into the world of PHP. At the

time, however, I had no contacts for other PHP programmers. And such, I

set out about hacking my way through the language.

I found that it was best to set goals. I found something that I wanted

to accomplish, and then I researched how I would do it. Once complete,

I would then set about finding a better way to do it. I ended up with

several projects that never amounted to much. But as I grew, each goal

or project grew in complexity. Eventually, I learned enough to embark

on a massive project. And the Swing-CMS engine

was born.

Albeit, what you see here today wasn't my first attempt. Originally, I

wrote a very simple CMS that I called "Pivot" for my group,

href="http://fulcrum.antisoc.net">Fulcrum. Being naive, I developed

my own template engine that would search and replace tags with PHP

scripts. Ultimately, the system worked, but it was flawed. Armed with

knowledge from "Pivot", I moved on to the first iteration of Swing. It

was a step in the right direction, but it too was flawed and the big

problem was once again the template system.

Finally, I developed a pretty solid core for my engine. And I got here

because I really broke a lot of things. But I didn't have the benefit

of having someone like me offering advice. Sure, you'll still break

stuff, but hopefully you won't run into the same problems that I had.

Here are some quick tips that I can offer to you while you're learning

PHP

Plan Ahead

You can't anticipate every problem

that may arise, but plan ahead. Frequently used aspects of your

application should be stored in functions or classes so that you can

call them from anywhere.

Format Your Code

Follow standard coding

guidelines. Take advantage of whitespace for organization, indent

content within loops, functions or classes and develop commenting

styles.

Use PEAR

For those of you who aren't aware, PEAR is a depository of high quality (and widely used) PHP extensions. Most

of your common applications are here. Want to easily connect to the

database and manage your queries? Several solutions to choose from

(PEAR DB is the most common). Conversions between XML and BBCode, it's

there. This is a great place to start to save yourself time.)

Use PhpDocumentor

Especially for your larger

applications, it can be hard to keep track of your functions and

variables. PhpDocumentor requires you to comment in a special way, but

it's worth it. From your comments, it will generate HTML documents that

will become a wonderful resource. PhpDocumentor is available at the

PEAR website.

Use Smarty

Smarty, as I mentioned earlier, is a template system for PHP. It is very useful in writing web applications

as it helps you keep your code and your HTML templates separate. It's

easy to use and there's no reason to write your own template system.

Never Work on Production Source

Even if you don't

have a production installation, it's a good idea to work on a copy of

your code. You never know when something you do can royally mess up a

project, and it may be hard to revert back to where you were. At the

very least, work off of a copy. If at all possible, try using a CVS or

a Subversion repository to keep track of your code. If you're working

on an Open Source project, check out SourceForge

Experiment

Don't be afraid to take risks. If

you're following my advice above, you're working on a copy anyhow, and

you can easily revert to an earlier version if you break something

serious.

Share Your Code

There is no better way to learn

than to share your code with others. Asking "How do I do this?" isn't

going to get you nearly as much response as if you were to post your

broken code and ask "Where did I mess up?" But this advice goes beyond

learning - this is about respect. Posting your code shows two things:

1) You want to learn a better way to do things and 2) You're willing to

contribute. PHP gurus like to help those who will carry on their

legacy.

Get Involved

Sometimes, the best project is one

that's run by someone else. There are plenty of projects looking for

help on SourceForge (like mine). Just be honest with the project leader

about your skills. They often won't turn down help. Even if you're

mostly beta testing, there's lots to learn from a large project.

Besides, it's a good resume builder if you're in the field.
