The mobility of Laptop and its convenience motivated me to buy a laptop   and put my desktop computer in the corner.  It  is  a very powerful tool that I  can carry  and use  anytime I want to access my e-mails,  write  articles and blogs and even presentation during meetings .

However, to be able to continue enjoying this convenience, one must be able to keep the battery from being easily drained out.  The rechargeable battery allows the user to operate the laptop for a considerable amount of time.

Ways to follow in managing the battery life of the laptop longer.

1.       Reduced programs running on the background and the external devices attached to the laptop.

• Shut down unnecessary programs running on the background. Desk top searches and other applications drain the battery faster.
• USB devices consume considerable power. It is highly recommended that these devices should be unplugged when not in use.
• Empty CD/DVD-ROM drive.  The computer spins the CD or DVD in the drive even when not being actively used. The internal process also uses up battery charge.
• Avoid multi-tasking when in battery mode. Working simultaneously on a particular document, listening to music and transferring data all at the same time will drain the battery fast.

2.       Place the laptop in “hibernate mode” when not in active use. Click or set it to “hibernate mode” rather than “standby mode”. Actual settings and state would be saved and the system completely shuts down afterwards.

3.       Maintain regular defragmentation. Defragging the hard drive regularly increases its efficiency thereby guarantees system faster performance.  This should be done when the laptop is plugged into an AC supply   and not while  on battery mode.

4.       Proper care should be done with the battery like cleaning the   metal contact for efficient transfer of power. Do not allow the charged battery to remain unused for a long time. Drained the battery   once in every 3 months.  If you store the battery, store it relatively drained. Use the battery at least twice a month.

5.       Upgrade memory. Adding more RAM (Random Access Memory) to the laptop would speed up some processes, especially those that require virtual memory from the hard disk.

Other basic could also save the battery life power longer.  Refer to the laptop’s power management manual and execute applicable power saving features. Setting up and optimizing power options, dimming the screen to the most tolerable level and avoid using the laptop as a charger would save power when you are in battery mode.

Following these simple tips  may not  increase the ampere-hour of your laptop’s battery but it would optimize the number of hours of enjoying  the convenience of your laptop by ensuring  that the battery  is not drained  as much as  it  usually  would when the power saving features are not  availed of.

Listening to the radio on a laptop –who would have guessed? That is the nifty feature on the new Toshiba Protégé M800 notebook –at least in this configuration. The notebook comes built in FM tuner, which allows the user to get radio reception on the laptop, anywhere there is reception. The radio is tuned via software that is capable to keep radio presets for easy access. The radio function is also usable worldwide –perfect for globe trotting businessmen who wants to listen to the local radio for information and entertainment. Alas, the radio function is not accessible within Window Vista’s Window Media Center, which is included with Vista Home Premium.

The finish on the notebook is best described as shiny. The whole notebook has a light grey finish, with a silver band going around the lip of the LCD and the main body of the notebook. This is supplemented by a subtle design of light silver lines traversing the body of the M800. The shiny finish is unfortunately a fingerprint magnet, but due to the overall color of the notebook, the fingerprint goes unnoticed. There are also a row of touch-sensitive media buttons along the top of the notebook, beside the flushed power button. The touchpad gets a mention here as it as an interesting design, seeing it is not recessed like a typical touchpad. The design has it flush with the hand rest area. A strip of light denotes the boundary of the otherwise seamless surface. The battery on the M800 is something of a surprise – i managed to coax out a usage time of 3 hours and 45 minutes –a number that is astonishing if you consider that the battery is only rated at 3700mAh. Usually, a three plus hour battery life laptop is shipped with a battery with at least 4500mAh power rating. The frugal power usage from a small battery is due to the Core 2 Duo T5550 processor, which uses less power than a normal Core 2 Duo chip. The Intel X3100 Graphic Media Accelerator (GMA) is also contributor for the frugality in power consumption, which is nice, but limits the laptop in graphic processing powers. No high detail Crysis for you on this notebook.

Connections wise, it has the pre-requisite 802.11b/g capability, 3 USB ports, an Ethernet port, a combination SD/MMC/Memory Stick/Memory Stick Pro Card reader, a VGA-out port, a 4-pin Firewire port, microphone and headphone in. It also has an ExpressCard slot for future expansion of capabilities for the M800. For security, the M800 includes a fingerprint scanner that can be used as a login method to the notebook. The hard disk is protected with a shock absorber system, which is similar to the IBM hard drive protection system where the read head is locked when excessive movements is detected. The Toshiba M800 is an attractive notebook to own.     

Though both the PCs and the Macs retain the feature of running an operating system, the operating systems that can be installed on each computer vary. An operating system is a collection of software that runs the computer while it is on. Nearly any operating system can be installed on a PC, including Windows and Linux. The only operating system that cannot be legally installed on a PC is the Mac OS. The Mac OS comes in several versions, and a new version is released nearly every year. Most PCs include an operating system pre-installed. Macs come pre-installed with Mac OS X, a series of Mac OS operating systems that have been used since September 13, 2000. The current Mac OS X version is Mac OS X 10.5.4 Leopard, and a future version of Mac OS X is planned for release sometime during the summer of 2009. Through the assistance of Boot Camp, a program that has been included with Mac OS X 10.5 Leopard and will be included in future versions, users are allowed to install different operating systems onto their Mac through the creation of partitions on their hard drive. Just as an operating system is a form of software, security programs are also a vital form of software for a computer.

Security is another issue between the PCs and the Macs. Both PCs and Macs have the ability to log onto the internet, and when they have fully accessed the internet, they can be easily bombarded by viruses, spyware, and adware; which are all harmful to a computer, whether it is a PC or a Mac. PCs never come with security software, and the Windows operating systems do not include security. Macs, however, have built in, high-level security that is built into Mac OS X because the operating system is coded in Unix, a form of coding language. Along with software differences, PCs and Macs have differences in hardware.

Hardware-wise, Macs and PCs are very different. The most noticeable design feature on the Mac is a glowing Apple logo. Macs usually have a glowing Apple logo on the lid of notebooks or the side of desktops. The design of a PC varies by the company that developed it. Ever since Apple has started using the PowerPC G4 Processor platform, they have started to use more environmentally-friendly materials in their Macs, such as aluminum and glass. Most Macs these days are made of aluminum, and have a glass monitor. For one to upgrade the hardware of a PC or a Mac is not uncommon. Hardware upgrades allow computers to run faster and more efficiently. Most upgrades on a laptop are for RAM, yet on the Apple MacBook, upgrading the hard drive, normally a difficult feat on a PC, is easy. Apple's professional desktop, the Mac Pro, contains no visible internal wires, and there are very few situations where a screw driver is required for an upgrade. Though the PC and Mac are very similar and different in scores of ways, they have made a great impact on the world today.

Computers have been the scaffolds for world-changing innovations since their creation, and they impact the world greatly. I could never imagine the world without computers, and the introduction of PCs and Macs has only opened a door of opportunity for the world, and although they are very different, they have created the path for more advanced technology, and will send mankind further into the future.

One of the most important considerations is choosing between a portable notebook size or a larger permanently placed desktop model. There are several advantages and disadvantages to each of these types.

The smaller, portable notebook obviously is the way to go if you need to take your system with you to work, school, or other location outside of the house. Others try to drain every last key stroke, so that they use their batteries until the computer shuts off, then wonder why, over time, they get less and less time.

To extend your battery life, follow these simple rules:

1. Never leave your Notebook plugged in over night.
2. Never leave it plugged in when it is not being used.
3. Never go to the last drop, when you get the low battery warning, finish up and shut down naturally.
4. Near a power source, use your battery, and stop when you have about thirty minutes left, then plug in the computer, and continue.
5. Use your battery at least every day, even for a short time.
6. When you buy a new computer, plug it in, use it until the battery is fully charged, unplug it, use it until it runs to the low battery warning, plug it in, charge it, then let it run down again. Follow this method for two or three days.
7. After about six months, wrap your battery in a few plastic bags and put it into the freezer for a few hours. Move it to the fridge for about thirty minutes then put it into your computer. This will act as a kind of reactivation of your battery.
8. When your Notebook is three years old, before putting the battery into the freezer, softly knock it against wood for about two minutes before insertion into the plastic bag.
9. If you are in a very hot environment, let your battery sleep in the fridge at night. Always put it into plastic to prevent moisture damage.

By using the battery, letting it discharge, and recharging it you keep it healthy. But stopping all procedures by placing it in the freezer, you extend it's life.

Many people who have "never" used their batteries find that they run down, so that after a year, they might need replacing.

This is also experienced by those who leave their Notebooks always plugged in.

Using a product for what it is made for, that is, to be portable and operated by batteries, is a way to extend the life of the product.

The most important thing is take care to prevent your note book from physical punishment, such as dumping or dropping It will cause your Notebook damaged especially when the Notebook is functioning or charging. Avoid putting pressure on the power jack while the AC Adapter is plugged. This could break the adapter plug. Keep the Notebook more than 13 cm (5 in.) from any electrical appliance that generates a strong magnetic field, such as a motor, magnet, TV, refrigerator, or large audio speakers. The other thing is keep liquid away from your Notebook.

When your are working with diskette, CD, DVD or handy drive, make sure the diskette or handy drive is insert into the computer properly. CD's or DVD's should be placed properly into the tray and push gently to avoid the tray broke out. It is important not to touch the lens on the CD-ROM tray. Make sure the CD-ROM is properly seated before you close the tray. Also, you should hold the compact disc by the edges and not touch its surface.

When you are operating your Notebook or charging the Notebook's battery, do not leave the base of your Notebook in contact with your lap or any part of your body for and extend period. Your Notebook dissipates some heat during normal operation. Extended contact to the skin could cause discomfort or eventually, a skin burn.

Notebooks usually use Lithium Ion Battery. It is light, has a big capacity and recharges fast. But they are not cheap and get old very fast. After about 2-3 years Lilon will work only half time.

You should always fully use your battery; never leave your notebook on direct sunlight. Optimal battery work temperature is +22. Max is +30. You also should remove battery from notebook if you have plugged it to electricity.

How to make battery work longer?

First of all, remove all discs and memory cards. Also disconnect all devices, which are not used. Most of the battery is used by screen, cooler, graphics card. By changing few “Windows” settings, you will save much battery power.

“Windows XP”

1. Go to Control Panel. Switch to classic view and select POWER OPTIONS.
2. From the list select MAX BATTERY and press OK.

Our computer will become slower, but it will save much power.

Turning of unused devices

If we don't watch movies or music, we should turn off sound. Press the volume icon on right corner of the screen (next to the clock) and select MUTE.

If you are listening music or watch movies alone, you should use headphones. They will not only save power, but the sound will be better.

Computer screen uses much battery power. We should reduce its brightness.

Now we should turn of unused devices.

1. On your keyboard hold button WIN and press PAUSE. In new window select HARDWARE, after that DEVICE MANAGER.
2. Here we can turn off unused devices. For example, I don't need my modem right now. Select MODEMS. Then, with your right mouse button, press on our modem device.
3. Now press DISABLE. After that, YES.
4. Now turn off all unused devices. If you will need them on, do 3 step and select ENABLE.

Saving power with graphics card

If we are playing games or watching movies often, we shouldn't do this.

For “Ati Catalyst” drivers:

1. On your desktop press right mouse button and select PROPERTIES.
2. Select SETTINGS. Then find and press ADVANCED. Now press CATALYST CONTROL CENTER.
3. In new window press ATI CATALYST ® Control Panel. In new window select Advanced and press NEXT. After that, press YES.
4. Select POWERPLAY™. If we can't find this, that means our graphics card can't work with power saving.
5. Select ENABLE POWERPLAY™ and high battery, low battery move to left.

For “Ati Catalyst” drivers:

1. On your desktop press right mouse button and select PROPERTIES.
2. Select SETTINGS. Then find and press ADVANCED. Now press POWERPLAY™.
3. Now select ENABLE POWERPLAY™ and press APPLY.

“Nvidia” graphics card

1. On your desktop press right mouse button and select PROPERTIES.
2. Now find and press SETTINGS. Then press ADVANCED.
3. Now select your graphics card. Now find and press POWERMIZER.
4. Now move the arrow to left (Maximum Power Savings).
